The four varnas i.e Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vyshya and shudra, were the ancient sorting out of human beings as followed in "Manu Smrithi", as per their hereditory lineage and general aptitude. It was certainly a majority classification, but, a few exceptions were there. The Brahmana community was the scholarly group, who mastered the various texts like Upanishads, the Vedas and Shaastras. They were operating gurukulas, to teach their disciples, who might have been from all the four communities. Primarily, they were scholars and they had the patronage of their kings, who were generally Kshatriyaas. Col. J. Desaraj Urs (WW1)

Jagirdar Desaraj Urs , CIE ,MVO was born on 12 th Nov 1862, son of Puttu Desaraj Urs of Balekere, later adopted by Sardar Desi Devaraj Urs of Bagle.Educated at Royal School, and  London Mission High school., at Mysore. Was Military Attache (1884), attached to 3 rd Madras Light Cavalry, served in Burma Campaign (1886), Promoted as Subedar (1888), ADC to Maharaja(1887-94), became Commandant Mysore Imperial Service Lancers (1894-1916), ADC to Maharani (1894 -1902). Married Maharajakumari Krishnajammanni on 20 th April 1896. Received India GSM with Burma Clasp (1889), Delhi Durbar medals (1903, 11), Prince of Wales Visit Medal (1906). Maharajkumari Krishnajammanni passed awy on 22 nd Nov 1904, due to Tuberculosis, leaving behind a son and three daughters. In her memory, the first Sanatorium was built at Mysore. More details of these “Urs” Lancers are required from any one or a descendant 1. Risaldar. T. Nanjaraj Urs , Mysore Imperial Service Lancers WW 1 . (missed Honour Roll) son of Subbaraj Urs of Mysore, died in accidental drowning on 21Feb 1917, Grave at Heliopolis (Port Tewfik) Memorial, near Cairo, Egypt. No other details are available from any of the descendants 2. Risaldar M.B. SUBBARAJA URS , Mysore Imperial Service Lancers. WW 1 The award " Indian Distinguished Service Medal " was bestowed and gazetted and is assumed to be for his gallantry associated with the defence of the Suez Canal. (Perhaps for reconnaissance duties.) A patrol commanded by Subbaraja Urs, was near the enemy ferry-post Ismailia on 02 February 1915, the enemy suddenly opened fire and the Lancers had to retire.
