"SHAURYA CHAKRA"  AWARDED  TO  IC-73334X      MAJOR.  ANIL  URS ,  

 4th Battalion  MARATHA  LIGHT  INFANTRY on the eve of the  INDEPENDENCE DAY OF INDIA 2020

The Citation read at the Presidential Investiture on 15th August 2020:

"Major Anil is a Company Commander deployed along the line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir.

On receipt of intelligence of concentration of terrorists across Line of Control form possible attempt to cross LoC and act to cause casualities to own troops, Major Anil laid an ambuash along the appreciated route of movement.

Displaying good tactical acumen and strong resolve, the officer waited patiently maintaining complete surprise. On spotting the group of terrorists, Major anil brought down effective fire killing three terrorists. Being in close proximity to the Line of Control, his action drew violent and effective fire from parties across the Line of Control.

Enduring the risk of loss of life, Major Anilk displayed extraordinary  leadership, nerves of steel and spirit of service before self, where he chose to remain at the location awaiting an opportunity to engage  rest of the terrorists.  After life threatening wait of fifteen minutes, the team sighted and accurately brought down fire on two more terrorists leading to neutralisation of two two more terrorists.

For displaying raw courage, marksmanship and rare combat leadership, while ensuring safety of his team,Major Anil Urs is awarded the "SHAURYA  CHAKRA" "

        Maj.Anil Urs has brought  name and fame to his family, the community, the State and the Nation. May God Almighty bless him with more bravery decorations. 

(Major Anil Urs is the son of Maj. B.S.Nanjaraj Urs and Smt D.N.Radha Urs. His great grandfather       ( from mother's side) and the mother of Shri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar happened to be siblings.

Anil Urs was born at Mysore on 16th November 1984. Later the family moved to Bangalore. After completing schooling from Army Public School, Bangalore, he continued his graduate studies in Bio Technology at City College, Jayanagar.  He lost his father in 2002. defying all odds and driven by his strong will to join the Indian Army, he cracked the Combined Defence Services examination and then attended the consequent  Services Selection Board interview, group discussion, and viva-voce etc.,. in the year 2006. He passed out from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai in the year 2007, as a 2nd  Lieutenanat and was allotted the famous 4^th Battalion of Maratha Light Infantry( former 116^th Mahrattas, were an Infantry Regiment of the British Indian Army. The regiment traces their origins to 1800, when they were raised as the 2^nd Battalion, 7^th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry)   He has much experience in high altitude warfare, as most of his tenure is spent in Jammu and Kashmir.. He is also one of the youngest Officers, to have been awarded with commendations from the GOC-in-C on two occasions. He continues to serve as the company commander of 4th Battalion Maratha Light Infantry.

Major Anil Urs is married to Mrs Manju Singh Urs, daughter of Sri.Gangeshwar Singh, IPS., DG and IGP, EB, of West Bengal Cadre. Anil is blessed with a daughter Ananya Urs, who is 5 yrs old. )

  The Ursu community  has to be overjoyed that an Ursu-  Major Anil  Urs,  has in 2020 got the "Shaurya Chakra" the bravery Award of the Indian Army.  It was over a  hundred years ago, when Mysore Lancers  were in  the Middle Eastern Sector of the First World  War (1914-18), we read about bravery awards  for five of the Urs Officers like the  (a)"  Indian Order of  Merit-2nd Class"  , "IOM" (very   near the famed Victoria Cross) ,awarded to Capt A. Lingaraj Urs , (b)  the " Military Cross ",the "Indian Distinguished Service Medal",  "Order of the White Eagle  of Serbia- 5th Class"  awarded  to Risaldar. B.P.Krishne Urs   (c)  "Order of White Eagle(4th Class), the "Order of British India-1st Class" awarded to Lt Col. B. Chamaraje Urs, with Mentions in despatches (d) ,the “Indian Distinguished Service Medal” for 2 I/C Risaldar Squadron Commander M.B. Subbaraja Urs and (e) three times “Mention in Despatches” for Risaldar Squadron Commander A. Basavaraj Urs.

. . They fought then with swords and Lances  on horse back, unlike the present day state of the art  automatic rifles   and other weapons.  Let us pray to Almighty  for giving us more  Anils.   Hope the Gandabherunda Award  from the Palace of Mysore , shows up in this young Officer's  neck.   God bless the young Officer and family.

The Shaurya Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes posthumously. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra. It precedes the Sena Medal.

Medal: Circular bronze, 1-3/8 inches in diameter. In the centre, the Ashoka Chakra, surrounded by a lotus wreath and with an ornate edge. Suspended by a straight bar suspender. The medal is named on the edge.

Reverse: For pre-1967 awards, the medal is blank in the centre, with "Ashoka Chakra" in Hindi along the upper edge on the medal and the same name in English along the lower rim, "ASHOKA CHAKRA". On either side is a lotus design. The centre is blank, perhaps with the intent that details of the award be engraved there. There is no indication of the class on the pre-1967 awards. For the post-1967 awards, the, names are changed to "Shauryua Chakra" in Hindi above and "SHAURYA CHAKRA" below.
